Carbon fiber violin vs wood – which is the better choice? There has to be some benefit – right?

Let’s find out if modern technology truly has caught up with the violin.

Out of all the string instruments, theviolin is the one with the richest history. For hundreds of years, luthiers made violins in well-known workshops where they carved wood until getting the perfect shape.

That’s how all the famous and most expensive violins are made – through a thorough and lengthy process.

Nowadays, there’s a lot of innovative materials and ways to produce superior musical instruments. With carbon composites, it’s possible to make one much faster than from wood.

We hope you find this article helpful, informative and unbiased. Just so you know, we may receive compensation if you use the links on this page. If you do, thank you so much!

A violin made of wood may be the traditional way to go, but it a carbon fiber violin can be made stronger, and faster.

Plus, this works well for today’s market, where nobody can wait for months until their instrument is ready.

Every violinist also has an opinion regarding carbon fiber violin vs wood violin. After all, beginner, intermediate or professional violinists have different requirements for the quality of an instrument.

And if you’re more inclined to modern music than classical pieces, that will also influence your opinion.

In this short guide, we’ll try to explain all the factors involved in deciding whether a wooden instrument and bow are better than carbon alternatives.

Or, indeed, if there’s any middle ground.

Wooden Violins vs Carbon Fiber Violins

Characteristics of Wood Violins

Every luthier knows that a good piece of dried wood is the key to success. The instruments they hand carve are marvelous in their sound properties as well as looks.

Usually, wooden violins are made from spruce, maple, pear, and sycamore, depending on the luthier’s knowledge and preference.

Luthiers often use maple since it features flame-like lines that a suitable varnish accentuates.

The varnish quality alongside the wood has a significant impact on the future sound as it makes it warmer and adds more depth.

Of course, if the wood has gone through a long drying process that lasted for more than ten or twenty years, its quality is marked as premium.

That’s why violins like Ming Jiang Zhu 925 Violin and Scott Cao Superior Signature Series come with a serious price tag.

These instruments are handcrafted, and the wood quality guarantees the best possible sound.

Wooden Violin Features

Flexible instrument

Easy to play on

Rounded sound

Strong projection

Versatility

Sensitive

Characteristics of Carbon Violins

Everyone agrees that a carbon fiber violin sounds slightly different from a wooden violin.

Due to the specific construction method and other materials used to create it, carbon fiber instruments have a more profound and louder projection than their wooden counterparts.

You see more and more carbon violins in orchestras, even among professional musicians, especially if they want to perform in various indoor and outdoor locations.

Instruments like the progressive five-string Glasser AEX Carbon Composite violin are examples of how carbon violins combine advanced technology and great acoustic potential.

The flexibility of a carbon instrument is very different from that of a wooden instrument. Hence, why you see a lot of carbon fiber fiddles used by performance artists.

Any Glasser violin could be a great choice as you can find them in various colors, thus adding a visual component to any performance.

For gig performers, a violin often used as a fiddle is Glasser Carbon Composite 5-String Violin.

Carbon Fiber Violin Features

Strong carbon body

Good projection

Sharp sound

Great for outdoor performances

Variety of colors and designs

Wooden Violin Bows vs Carbon Fiber Bows

Characteristics of Wooden Bows

Wooden bows are usually made from brazilwood if they’re mid-class and Pernambuco for the middle and upper class.

These were standard materials for violin bows as they were the only light and flexible materials available.

Pernambuco violin bow

In recent years, Pernambuco became an endangered plant; cutting it was prohibited. That’s why wooden bows became scarce and very expensive.

On the other hand, a brazilwood bow is often a combination of several types of wood. In terms of price, they can vary from less than $50 to several hundred.

The factor determining the cost of any wooden bow is the craftsmanship used to combine its five parts.

Wooden Violin Bow Features

Flexible

Lightweight and easy to maneuverable

Strong

Sensitive to humidity

Fragile and easy to break

Characteristics of Carbon Fiber Bows

Carbon is a composite material you can use to create strong and flexible instruments at only a fraction of the cost compared to wooden ones.

Composite materials have the same level of flexibility, and they’re often stronger and scratch-resistant.

A lot of professional players opt to use carbon bows to create better resonance and better projection.

Carbon Fiber Violin Bow

More recently, both intermediate and professional violinists have started using carbon bows. Some even have several to choose from.

As far as the sound is concerned, the bow’s most crucial feature is its balance, but every player decides what fits them better.

When it comes to band gigs or concerts, players mostly use carbon bows to suit their strength since they find wooden ones too sensitive to humidity.

To find the best carbon violin bow, you’ll have to hear how it sounds first. But keep in mind that all of them have various characteristics, features, and price points.

A braided carbon fiber bow is one of the best you can find on the market. Unlike standard composite carbon bows that are hollow on the inside, braided carbon bows have a solid core that makes them stronger.

The braids come from carbon fibers, making the bow look more refined than a standard model.

One of the most recommended premium quality braided carbon bows is the Glasser Braided Carbon Fiber Sterling Silver Bow.

Some of the best performers use carbon bows at their concerts. However, keep in mind that if you want to get a good carbon fiber bow, it needs to have at least 60% carbon fiber for the best resonance.

And if you want a premium carbon fiber bow, those that have more than 80% of fibers will feel better than any wooden bow you’ve tried. Of course, it comes with a price tag.

Top quality carbon fiber violin bows are exceptionally good

That said, there are still musicians who still prefer wooden bows. In the end, it’s a matter of taste and preference as you can achieve superior performance with both.

Is Carbon Fiber Stronger Than Wood?

Because it’s a composite material, carbon is more robust than wood as it’s tough to break.

Another benefit of using a carbon fiber bow is that humidity can’t change its structure; it will stay the same for a long time.

Ensure that you’re buying a bow with more than 60% carbon, and it will be very strong.

On the other hand, if you get a bow with 45% or fewer carbon fibers, the bow might break easily.

Can a Carbon Fiber Bow Break Easily?

In terms of durability, carbon bows are almost impossible to break during a performance.

Braided carbon bows like the Glasser Braided Carbon Fiber Sterling Silver Bow are among the best since they are not hollow but filled with carbon fibers.

In Conclusion, Do You Prefer Modern Violins, Traditional, or a Combination of Both?

The debate about carbon fiber violin vs wood violin still rages on. It seems that carbon and other composite materials have become more prominent as wood is more expensive and harder to find.

Since every violin and bow feel differently depending on the material, each artist must decide what feels more comfortable while performing.

Every violin and bow will feel different

For some, the wood will always be more refined, while carbon composite allows more freedom.

In a way, with new versions of traditional instruments, the performance possibilities become endless.

Before you make a final decision on whether you’ll get a wooden or carbon fiber violin and bow, make sure you try as many as you can.

You’ll get a better sense of their benefits and drawbacks – and In the end, you can also combine them for the best effect.
The post Carbon Fiber Violin vs Wood – In Pursuit Of Excellence first appeared on NewViolinist.

The violin is a fantastic musical instrument that’s been around since ancient times. Nearly every opera or classical music performer now owns one. With different makes and brands, you have plenty of choices on the table.

How much does a violin bow cost?

One of the things that learners and intermediate violin players have in mind when shopping for a violin bow is the cost of acquiring one. Size, shape, material, and brand all influence the price. So how much does a violin bow cost?

On the lower side, a violin bow could cost you under $50, while on the higher side, it could cost you thousands of dollars. For starters, you’d want to go for something in the range of $50 to $100 or slightly more. But if you’re an intermediate player, a bow that’s in the range of $100-300 would be a good purchase.

Fiberglas violin bows are somewhat cheap and at the lower end of the price spectrum. Beginner bows cost less than $100. In between wooden and fiberglass lies the carbon fiber violin bow, which is a great all-purpose bow. One will set you back by $50 to $300.

Wooden bows, made from Brazilwood or Pernambuco, are the costliest of the four. A cheaper one goes for roughly $100 bucks, but the best wooden bow runs into thousands of dollars.

As a rule of thumb, buy a violin bow that generally costs 20-25% of the price of your violin.

How to buy a violin bow

When shopping around for a violin, you need to keep a few things in mind so you can get a quality bow while saving time and money.

The shape of the bow: Violins are available in either octagon shape or round shape. The latter is a good shape as it is less stiff and simultaneously more comfortable to configure.

Materials: Violin bows are made from four kinds of durable but lightweight material: Pernambuco, Brazilwood, carbon fiber, and synthetic material.

Weight and balance: Each bow comes with a distinct weight and balance. A heavier bow will create a deeper sound while a lighter bow will create pure sounds with every stroke.

Violin size: Ensure that violin size matches your body size. If you’re an adult, the full size (or 4/4 size) violin might suit you. But if you have shorter arms or body, consider the 7/8.

Strength: A good violin bow should be reasonably reliable yet sufficiently flexible, so the material used should carry both properties.

Final thoughts

Your violin bow is more than an accessory, so you should give it much thought before you buy one. Get a good bow, and it will serve you right for many years. Get a poor one, and it will belt out sorrowful strokes to the chagrin of your audience.

Buying a violin bow shouldn’t be a problem if you know what you’re looking for in a violin. A good bow should cost roughly a 1/3 of the price of a violin.
The post How Much Is a Violin Bow? first appeared on NewViolinist.

What are violin bows made of? What are the other components of a violin bow? What does it cost to repair a bow? These are all excellent questions that many beginner violinists ask themselves. We’ll do our best to answer all of the above and more.

What kind of wood are violin bows made of?

This is going to depend on the manufacturer and the price that they charge. Traditionally, violin bows are constructed using Pernambuco. Don’t be confused if you have heard Brazilwood— these are actually from the same tree.

The difference is that the Pernambuco wood is removed from the core of the tree. It is easier to work and shape and more durable. The sap layer of the tree is where you’ll find what is commonly known as Brazilwood.

Unfortunately, the tree itself is now on the endangered list, so its use is severely restricted. Rosewood has also been used but is likewise protected now. As a result, bowmakers have had to look elsewhere for materials to craft bows out of.

This has already lead to some innovative options, like carbon fiber and fiberglass or epoxy being used. It’s not surprising when you consider the history of violins – they have often been adapted over the centuries.

How much is a bow for a violin?

Depending on the material the bow was made from, expect to typically pay anywhere between $50 and $200. Some professional bows can even be worth more than the instrument!

As bows made out of Pernambuco become more difficult to come by, you can expect to pay more of a premium for them, even if they are well-used.

Ultimately, there will come a time when your bow is not going to produce the kind of results that you want. With use, some or all of the hairs used may break. It is at these times that you will need to start considering whether to re-hair your bow or buy a new one.

As a good rule of thumb, the more expensive the bow, the more it makes sense to replace the hair. If you are using a cheaper quality bow, on the other hand, the cost of this procedure may easily outstrip the cost of buying a new piece altogether.

We hope this has covered all your questions regarding what violin bows are made of and considerations involved in their repair. If not, we’d love to hear your questions.

What are violin bow strings made of?

Of course, the wood for the bow itself is just a small part of the whole and plays a supporting role. It’s the hair that is strung across it that helps you produce music. While there are some bows that use synthetic string, horsehair is the traditional and best solution.

Can a violin bow be restrung?

Yes, a violin bow can be restrung, and in fact, should be restrung from time to time. How often this is to be done depends on how often you play, whether or not you break strings, etc.

What do you do when your violin bow string breaks?

In some instances, it might be possible to carry on playing regardless. This is because there are several strands of horsehair used in the making of a bow. It’s important to have your bow restrung as soon as possible after strings break, even if you can still use it.

The bow may become unbalanced if some of the strings have broken and it could become warped if you are not careful. That’s why it’s a good idea to have a backup bow to switch over to in a pinch.

Here are considerations to make when deciding whether or not to replace your string:

How many hairs have broken? One is going to make little difference to the bow. If more have broken though, it could cause undue pressure on the structure of the bow.

How much did the bow cost?

How much will it cost to have the restringing done?

How much does it cost to re-hair a violin bow?

This may be where the rub lies for most people. Re-hairing will cost between $30 and $50 in the United States. Considering that you can often get a new bow for that price, restringing might not be regarded as worthwhile.

Generally speaking, though, if you have a high quality, expensive bow, it makes sense to re-hair it as necessary. If you’re working with a cheaper, student grade model, it might be more economical to buy a new one. You’ll need to weigh up your own personal circumstances and decide from there.

When it comes to playing the violin, learning what the different notes and finger placements are is important. It’s also important to understand what the different violin parts are and what they do.

We will go through the different parts of the violin in this post. Follow along on your violin or a violin parts diagram.

What Are the Parts of A Violin?

Scroll: This is the easiest of the violin parts names to remember because it is the uppermost tip of the violin. The piece that is curved like a scroll.

Pegbox and Tuning Pegs: Right next door to the scroll is the pegbox with the tuning pegs. This is where you will tighten or loosen the strings when they are out of tune.

The Nut: This connects the fingerboard to the pegbox. It is grooved so that the strings are evenly spaced.

The Strings: These are tuned from the lowest note to the highest. It is worth investing in good quality strings as this makes a huge difference to the sound produced.

The Neck: This is the section of the violin that takes the most strain from the strings. It is the piece of wood that is glued to the back of the fingerboard.

The Fingerboard: This is the black area that is glued to the front of the neck. It is where you will place your fingers when playing.

The Body: This is the main part of the violin and is primarily hollow. The hollow spaces help to improve the sound quality and make it louder.

The Sound Post: This is a post that is in the body of the violin, and that joins the front and back piece. This helps to improve the sound and also helps to improve the structural integrity of the violin.

The F-Holes: These are the holes that look similar to scrolls on the body of the violin. They help to direct sound when you are playing.

The Violin Bridge: This is located near the bottom of the violin. It is the piece of wood that holds the strings up and away from the body of the violin. The shape of the bridge influences how easily notes can be played.

Fine Tuners: You may have one tuner on each string or just a tuner on your E string. For beginners, the former is easier to use. These help tighten the strings in smaller increments.

The Endpin/ Tailpiece: The strings are attached to the bottom of your violin by the tailpiece.

The Chin Rest: This gives you somewhere to rest your chin when playing and makes it easier to get the violin into the right position.

Violin Bow Parts

The Hair: This is what creates the sound when it is scraped across the strings. You will need to use rosin on it so that it can get some grip on the strings and thus produce a sound. Even the best violin bows need to be repaired, and this is what is replaced.

The Frog: This is the part at the bottom of the bow that attaches the bow and the stick.

The Screw: This is used to alter the tightness of the hair in the bow.

The Stick: This provides some structural support for the hair.

The Pad: This gives you a surface to grip when playing.

Where Can I Buy Replacement Violin Parts?

If you have a music supply store in the town that you live in, you might be able to get the parts that you are looking for there. It does, however, pay to look online because you can normally get better deals that way.

What’s the Difference Between Parts and Accessories?

Violin parts are best described as essential to the violin. i.e., you will not be able to play the violin without them. So, things that are integral parts of the violin, like the strings, the fine tuners, etc.

Accessories, on the other hand, are useful additions. They are not essential, but they do enhance the experience of using the violin. This would include things like a shoulder rest or rosin for the strings.

Which Parts of the Violin Wear Out Quickly?

The strings are bound to wear out the most quickly, and so it is essential to always have spare strings on hand. The bow of the violin needs to be properly cared for so that it lasts longer, but it will also wear out more often than most other parts.

Once you become more experienced with using your violin, you will understand what an important role each of these parts plays. Don’t get too caught up by the names though. Over time, your violin starts to feel like an extension of yourself. You’ll know what each part does, and have a great sense of when it needs attention of any kind.
The post Violin Parts: What Makes a Violin? first appeared on NewViolinist.

As a violinist, there are several different aspects to consider before investing in a bow. Choosing the right one can certainly be easier with proper guidance.

When learning a new instrument, choosing the correct tools for your skill level can be intimidating.

If you’re a beginner player there’s no need for an expensive or fine violin bow just yet.

You will need a stick that has proper balance, is not too light or too heavy, and is reasonably strong as you begin to perfect your skills and become a better player.

What Makes a Good Violin Bow?

As the professional violinists say, a bow should be an extension of your hand. It’s vital to find the best violin bow so that you can gain proper bowing techniques and ability.

When looking for an appropriate bow always consider the type of material, sound, balance and weight, and shape of the product. Finding a bow that makes you confident and your performance effortless is crucial.

Typically, inexperienced players have a difficult time understanding that different bows can create a diverse sound on the instrument.

Choosing a bow that creates the sound you want is significant to distinguish your personal playing style. Read below for more information on the top five bows on the market for new violinists today.

First impressions are always important so go with your gut. If a bow feels too heavy or light you may need to look into a different product.

When you’ve found a good bow, you should be able to play all parts of it comfortably. When testing out different products, make sure to listen for delicate differences in surface noise, clarity and fullness of sound.

You want a bow that will enhance your instrument not detract from it, so it’s imperative that you find a product that will work well with your violin.

Everyone will have a different opinion, so it’s essential to find a bow that is personally best for you.

As you begin to increase your skills and expertise over time, your ability to identify the difference between bows of a different make, shape, and balance will become clearer.
